What you are trying to do

Everyone starts at level 1 and races to level 10. You gain levels mainly by killing monsters, and occasionally from cards that say so. The first player to reach level 10 wins — but the winning level has to come from killing a monster, or from a card that explicitly allows it.

That one rule is why the endgame gets ugly: everyone saves their level-up cards and monster enhancers for the moment someone is about to win.

Setup

Separate the deck into Doors and Treasures. Deal four of each to every player, then put the two decks face down within reach. Everyone starts at level 1 with their starting hand.

Most cards tell you which deck to draw from, so keep the piles clearly apart — mixing them is the most common setup mistake.

How a turn works

Kick open the door: draw one Door card face up. If it is a monster, you fight it. If it is anything else, it goes into your hand (or you play it immediately if it is a curse or an item).

Combat is arithmetic. Your combat strength is your level plus bonuses from items, one-shots and any helper you bribed into the fight; compare that to the monster's level. Win and you gain a level and usually draw Treasures. Lose and you roll to run away: 5 or 6 on a die escapes, anything else costs you.

If there was no monster, you may Look for Trouble (play a monster from your hand) or Loot the Room (draw a second Door face down). At the end of your turn, if you hold more than five cards, give the excess to the lowest-level player.

Winning and the charity rule

Reach level 10 by killing a monster and the game ends immediately. Selling items can push you to level 9, but it cannot supply the winning level — that is what stops players from buying their way out of the dungeon.

The five-card hand limit keeps the table moving: hoarding is punished, and the weakest player keeps getting cards.

Tips that actually work

Do not help for free. Every favour is worth a Treasure or two, and the helper usually wants the level as well.

Hold one card that can cancel a fight. The last two turns of a Munchkin game are decided by who can still stop the leader.

Curse the leader, not the loser. It is a race, and second place gets nothing.

Munchkin: common questions

Can you win Munchkin by selling items?

No. Selling items gives you levels, but the winning level must come from killing a monster — or from a card that explicitly says it can be the winning level.

How many cards can you hold in Munchkin?

Five at the end of your turn. Anything over five goes to the lowest-level player, which is the charity rule.

Can you play cards on other players' turns?

Yes. Curses, monster enhancers and wandering monsters can all be played on anyone, and that is the whole point of the game.
